PLACE NAMES

Flamborough Head

This Oak Bay headland, immediately south of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, features a multimillion-dollar private residence.

Flotsam Cove
Small cove in The Uplands. Origin uncertain, possibly descriptive or possibly after namesake in Scotland.

Foul Bay (Gonzales Bay)
Descriptive, making reference to its navigation hazards.
Originally called Foul Bay on an official survey done about 1847. Confusingly called Fowl Bay from the late 1800s because of Isabella Ross' adjoining Fowl Bay Farm. Renamed Gonzales Bay in 1924 after decades-old campaign by area residents claiming the name Foul Bay negatively affected real estate values.

Foul Point (Harling Point)
Descriptive, making reference to its navigation hazards.

Original name of Harling Point. Sometimes referred to as Chinese Point after the Chinese cemetery that was built at this location in 1903.

Fowl Bay (Foul Bay / Gonzales Bay)
Descriptive, making reference to the abundance of water fowl
Early name given to Foul Bay by Isabella Ross who owned property — Fowl Bay Farm — along the waterfront from 1853. Officially called Gonzales Bay from 1924.

Funnel Cove
Small cove in The Uplands. Origin uncertain, possibly descriptive.
