Native Plant Garden
1939 —
Ada (Pemberton) Beaven gift to the municipality
.Native Plant Garden.
In 1939, Ada Beaven donated 1.4 acres of Arden for a native plant garden at Beach Drive and Margate Avenue. This garden park now features a small pond, rustic pathways and trees for shade. A picnic table and benches offer a relaxing spot for visitors.
In 2004, the Friends of the Oak Bay Native Plant Garden received the Hallmark Society "Award of Merit."

Newport Taxi originally operated out of 1171 Newport Avenue in 1930, but seems to have folded during the Depression.
Newport Taxi re-appeared in 1950 with co-owners Harold Attwell and Gordon Craig operating out of the Oak Bay Garage property at 2675 Windsor Road. The operation subsequently relocated to the Autohaus site at 1220 Newport Avenue (former site of Totem Super Service and current site of O'Keeffe's) where their two Mercedes-Benz vehicles could be maintained.
The unique, high-end service of Newport Taxi lasted into the 1970s.

Kenneth Bishop's film company that produced Secrets of Chinatown in 1935 out of his film studio in Oak Bay. Northern Films also rented out the Industrial Building on the Willows Fairgrounds as a fully-equipped movie soundstage.
