Some comments received . . .

I enjoyed being able to read through what I have been taught about playing bowls in the comfort of my home. You have very clear information. Thank you.
— Val, Howick, Auckland, New Zealand

Never having played or seen it played, I did not grasp too much of the descriptions. It sounds like a game between curling and bowling.
Sounds like fun.
— Pierrette Breau, Memramcook, NB, Canada

Hi! from Australia,
I began to learn lawn bowls four weeks ago.  This tutorial in it's simplest form has helped me see delivery and scoring methods more clearly.
Thank you.
— 'Bowls Newby', Queensland, Australia

Great Website
— Micheal Davies, Edithburgh RSL and Bowling Club, SA, Australia

The beginner is usually asked to play Lead, other times 2. They will have time to learn the duties of other positions by watching games.
It would be useful to a beginner to explain what they have to do as a team member, eg using the roller to collect the bowls if their team loses. Also how Skip would (or should) signal them. Also courtesy, not moving/talking, courtesy at the end of the game. I find the courtesy practised in a game creates good feeling, even when my team has lost.
— Dennis Fuller, Hersahm Village Bowls Club, Walton on Thames Surrey, England

How about a lesson on how to hold the ball and how to stand.
— Sidney Sinclair

Fun! Thanks!

A Good Tutorial but partially incorrect: The Jack can now only be turned over at the coin toss (at the start of the game or at an extra end if it is required)
— Euan Morrison, euan_m_morrison@btinternet.com, Thurso Bowling Club, Barrock, United Kingdom

The information was very informative.
Waisea Veiqaravi, Tamavua, Suva, Fiji islands

Yes, this was an excellent, easy-to-follow tutorial. I am fully understanding the basics! Look forward to my first ever game of outdoor bowls tomorrow!
Big thank you
Peggy, Kilmarnock, Scotland

Very good and informative.
— Peter Reed, Myfield Park, UK

A good guideline for beginners, has given me hope that i can do it. THANKZ
— W.A., Australia

I am off to an open day on Sunday to a local club, I have never played this ever! This was the perfect, simple but informative site. I can go on Sunday without feeling like a comlpete idiot. Thank you.
— Rosa, Chelmsford Essex, England

I am a Yank new to Australia and recently immigrated to Cairns area. I found my wife's first husband's bowls while cleaning the house and, as a former tenpin bowler who has lost two fingertips in an industrial accident, I was interested in the rules and how to play lawn bowls.
Thanks for the tutorial and the animation. It is all a very good description of how the game is played.
I hope to get more information and a chance to practice sometime soon. I know John would be glad to see his equipment being used again.
— Rick, Manunda & Bayview Hgts. Qld., Australia

Good indeed. Seeks little more details.
— Ramachandran Kunnil, India

Excellent !! Very instructive for beginners.
— Ralph Goodliffe, Belgrano Athletic Club, Buenos Aires, Argentina

When I play bowls, I have difficulty with a short jack, as I am always too heavy. What way should I throw the bowl, to get less weight up the green?? I am tall, and play golf, so am a strong woman, although not overweight. I hope you can offer a tip or two,
Suggestions are invited.
— Sheelagh Davidson, sheelagh_davidson@sky.com, Holywood Ladies Bowling Club, Belfast, United Kingdom

Hi There. My Name is Sasitharan and my son Hariprasaad (age 10) is starting to play the game. This information on web site is very important for us in order to get more informations and guidance. Thank you very much for the web site.
— sasitharan and Hariprasaad, Negeri sembilan (seremban 2), Malaysia

I enjoyed the tutorial very much. I didn't realize that the ball curves right or left as I thought you would just throw the ball straight towards the jack.
— Becky

Great new lesson for me. Now I am ready for the real deal :)
— Brian

The tutorial was excellent. I'd rate it better than the YouTube version of "bowling 101". Did someone within your club create it for you or did you go outside to acquire it? It's really first rate.
Joe White, president, Cincinnati (Ohio) Lawn Bowling Club, www.lawnbowling.org , Ohio, USA

Amazing. I'm an Olympian bowler.
— aapiegesig, westrin, baghdad, iraq

Very clever, just wish I had thought of it first and could have include it on our bowling club website!!!!! Congratulations.
— Neil Cooper, www.dorkingbowlingclub.co.uk, Dorking, Surrey, England

I am so lucky to have found your web site. I now know much more about the game of bowls. My first lesson is coming up and I am really looking forward to it. Thank you once again.
— David Joseph, Kent, England

This is a really great introduction for the new bowler. Any chance of more strategy tutorials for us a notch up from raw beginners?
— Dave Price, Newport Harbor LBC, NHLBC, Newport Beach, California, USA

The tutorial is brilliant! One quibble and one query: The tutorial says the jack moves forward. It actually moves back. Moving forward refers to a jack that ricochets and rolls towards the mat. Why do you show the player giving away shots on a mistake? Wouldn't it be more positive to show a player moving the jack to his own bowls?
— John Aveline, Kerrisdale, Vancouver, Canada
Your quibble has been addressed. Thank you! And your query is well taken and offers a strategy not discussed in the tutorial. Thanks again!

I have lawn bowls this weekend. I have just understood how it is they actually play and score this game after reading this tut...Very simple, to the point. Nice! Thank You.
— Alice Springs, Australia

Tutorial was great! Thank you! I am so looking forward to playing a game now. I didn't know anything about the game before but now I can attend a club for the first time with a little bit of confidence and won't feel too out of place.

Great Tutorial!
— Chelsey, Australia

Excellent tutorial, very helpful to someone interested in playing lawn bowls.
— Lea

Thanks. As a 1st timer, anything I learn is important to not only taking part, but becoming a decent challenger in the game. I do have a few queries on actually holding the bowl,:-
(1) The position of the fingers and thumb.
(2) How high from the green, is a good delivery ? i.e. I have seen a low smooth action, and dropping of the bowl from a much higher level.
(3) Position of delivery feet when delivering. i.e. does one foot point in the direction of the aiming distance spot.
— Eric, Australia ericfry@westnet.com.au

Thank you, I have just joined a club in Southampton. I found the tutorial a great help and also good fun.
— Terry Lane, Southampton, England

Made it very easy to have you explain the game to my wife, who I am trying to convince to play. Thanks for your help.
— John Troy, North Sydney Bowling Club, North Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

We have set up the first full size Lawn Bowls Club in France and are now in the process of creating our own website (www.bowlsinfrance.com). While looking for ideas we came across your animated Lawn Bowls Tutorial and all agreed that it is a wonderful initiative. Is there any possibility that we can use it on our web site? We have already had many enquiries from all over the world including Brazil, Hong Kong, Cyprus and the UK, we are confident that the inclusion of your Tutorial would assist us in promoting Lawn Bowls in this part of Europe.
— Dick Passmore, Périgord Lawn Bowls, France
Hi Dick. This animated lawnbowls tutorial can be licensed from webTurf for a nominal $10/month fee. It pays for itself just in the promotion of our club.

I really enjoy the tutorial — being able to watch the bowls being bowled to the jack.
— Agnes Lee, North Vancouver Lawn Bowling Club, North Vancouver, BC, Canada

Looking for animations for our website I found on the first Google page your website. I love the animated explanation for bowls and jack. My question is whether there are more animations and where I can find them? Next question is of course whether they are free to copy? Perhaps you know of other possibilities where and how to find animations. Kind regards.
— Ron Das, www.bowlsskip94.nl, Leidschendam, Netherlands
Hi Ron. This animated lawnbowls tutorial can be licensed from webTurf for a nominal $10/month fee. It pays for itself just in the promotion of our club.

Very good help for a novice...like me...bad knees...no more tennis...the greens await...thanks
— Irwin Lee, Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, California, USA

This was a very well thought out tutorial. In the central US I was not even aware of the game until the National Lampoon Movie "Black Ball". This makes the differences clear between this and Bocce...seems like a bigger challenge. I'll have to give it a try.
— John Walshire, Iowa City, Iowa, United States

Yes, this is a great tutorial – easy to understand. Is there a computer lawn bowls game on the market? Thanks.
— Bob O'Daley, Iluka, NSW, Australia

An excellent tutorial for beginners. I am a level two coach and am coaching (with help) fifteen juniors indoors. I will be passing on your web site to them this week. We are having a very wet season at the moment but hope it will soon improve. Good bowling to you.
— Tom Liddle, Fitz Park Bowls Club, Keswick, Cumbria, England

Enjoyed the experience.
— Jim Hart, National Coach & Press & Publicity Officer for The English Bowls Coaching Scheme, Gloucestershire, England

Love the tutorial! What a great use of the technology to show/teach what lawn bowling is all about! Keep up the good work!
— ES, Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club, Florida, USA

Excellent introduction to the game of bowls...even after playing a couple of games it's still worth the play. The "other" accompaning rules and regulations are a good read too...Thank you, and thanks to Google I found you.
— Leoroy, Brisbane, Australia

Thoroughly enjoyed, thank you. It has given me insight into how to think and play the game.
— Trevor Ainsley Thomas, Mount Pleasant Bowls Club, Neath, Wales, UK

The virtual tutorial is superb. It just took me about 10 mins to learn the basics of lawn-bowling. It was fun!
— CM, Hong Kong

Really good tutorial — easy to understand and simplistic. Well done!!
— S. Filipo, Auckland, New Zealand

This is a great idea and gives a newcomer to bowls a good idea of what it is all about. Congratulations for thinking of this presentation. Can this be expanded on to learn more strategies for the game? With thanks,
— Joan Broad, new bowler, Victor Harbor Bowling Club, Victor Harbor, South Australia, Australia

This was very interesting, and I shall endeavour to repeat it when I bowl this evening!

The tutorial is extremely helpful to the "novice" player and it is an excellent teaching tool. Thank you.
— Canada

This helped me sooooo much. Thank you!

I'm a lawnbowler from Bedford N.S. and I just saw your tutorial. Quite impressive, especially for new bowlers. Saw an article in The Globe and Mail Sat. June 3rd. I also like the fact that you dress in your whites. I feel it looks so nice to stand back and see a sea of white.
— Dave Pepperdene, Bedford Lawn Bowls Club, Nova Scotia, Canada

WOW! Cool! I really enjoyed the tutorial and now can play the game.....just need some field practice. Thanks.
— Irene, Edmonton

Loved it! Love the idea of the game, but have never played properly. Thanks.

I thought the tutorial was great! I am leaving for Vancouver tonight and I hope to do some bowling.
— Minnesota

Great tutorial. I will be the co-teacher for our club again this year. This is a good representation of the game. I will be contacting our Club President, Phil Thornton, and my co-instructor, June Pinkney, to view your site. I have seen your club while in Vancouver. Do you have guest privileges?
— Evan Bingley, Burlington Lawn Bowling Club, Burlington, Ontario, Canada

Excellent tutorial. I think the hardest thing to learn will be the curve of the ball, especially after playing 10 pin bowling. The tutorial definitely gives me a good insight to the game and how it's played, which I really didn't have much knowledge of previously. It is a very well put together website.
— Julie Cannon, Somerton. Brighton Sth Aust. Australia

Super beginners tutorial. Just what I needed.
— Wayne

A wonderful animation for people who are new to the game of bowls. How lovely it is to see a simple explanation of what could potentially be a difficult sport to explain.Well done and thanks!!!!
— Adam, Fife, Scotland

Thank U. It does really help. Could you also include tips on the proper holding of the woods and technique in swing. ps. Just pick up the game.

As a new player waiting to play their first season I found your animated tutorial very helpful. Many thanks for the people or person who thought of this. I hope I will be able to do as well on the rink.

a truly excellent introduction to the game for the beginner
— Lou Fitzgerald, Springwood, Queensland, Australia

Thank you for the pleasure I got watching your "Tutorial." I cannot imagine anyone interested in playing lawn bowls not being "hooked" after watching the "on screen" demo. I hope your effort attracts many new members to your lovely club.
— Bill Stewart, Norlane Bowls Club, Geelong, Victoria, Australia

Simple and precise instructions, well done.
— Art Butcher, Tsawassenn, Canada

A very clever and informative way to introduce people to the wonders of the game of bowling. The instructions were simple and easy to follow and I even felt myself 'talking' to the bowls as they sped up the 'green'. Overall, an excellent idea on how to promote an easy understanding on the game of bowls.
— Stuart Bell, Alva Bowling Club, Clackmannanshire, Scotland

Thank you for the explication about playing bowls. We'll use it as a link for our club members.
— Nel Braam, Haarlem Bowls, Haarlem, Netherlands

I bowled, the first time in my life, last night. It was fun and I intend to join the McArthur Island Lawn Bowling Club and continue to learn the game. Your turorial was most helpful in grasping the purpose of the fundamentals of the game. Thank you!

Thank you for your excellent tutorial! We will be joining a lawn bowls group in our area this year and we were very informed by your site. Now we at least will understand the terms and the object of the game when we get there for the first time!
— Linda and Lawrence Koley, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

This tutorial has been of immense help to me! I am a very amateur lawnbowler... my Grandfather has been playing for as long as I can remember, but it is only recently that he has sparked an interest for the game in me. Though I have just begun, I am loving it! Thank you so much for your help!
— Charlotte Anderson, London, England

Thank you for an excellent tutorial on this sport. My wife and I watched lawn bowling for an hour or so in Dursley, UK and since that time have wondered about the rules. Now we have been well informed, thanks to you.
— G M Joyner, Seattle, USA

Being very new to the sport and only just joined a club (I have not bowled at all yet) I found the tutorial fun to use and very informative. Thanks.
— Martin Girling, London, England

I was a terrible bowler until I took your tutorial. Now my game has progressed to mediocre. I can’t thank you enough.!! P.S. plus it was free.!!!!!!!
— John Robert Fitch (Retired), Calgary, Alberta

Very, very informative for a new or prospective bowler anywhere in the world. I am in Cape Town, South Africa and the game of bowls is truly a worldwide sociable game. Keep up the good work
— Les Guttmann, Western Province Cricket Club, Keurboom Park, Cape Town, South Africa

A good effort to explain the game to beginners. I hope it has provided you with some new members.
— Andrew Smith, Bellingham, UK

An extremely helpful demonstration. Assists in explaining the "physics" involved in the game. Easy to follow. Well done! Thank you.

Very good info and animation...congrats from a SBLBC member.
— Rosemary, SBLBC

Thank you! The tutorial was a delightful way to explain the game of lawn bowling to someone as unfamiliar with the game as I am. My lawn-bowling friend took me to see a tournament at Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club on Sunday, July 21, 2002; I wanted to see and understand the game he’s so passionate about. He kept up a running commentary during play, increasing my understanding and interest, but I still missed some of the game’s nuances. This tutorial helped and it was fun. Thanks.
